A Japanese room has one place set aside for this exact purpose: the tokonoma (床の間), a shallow recessed alcove that holds a single scroll and a single flower, and nothing else. Its power comes entirely from restraint — one object, given a frame and the authority of its own space. Sidekick is a tokonoma you can screw to any wall. Put one thing on it and the wall acquires a focal point. Put five things on it and you have a cluttered saucer. The design is asking you to choose.

How it is made — honestly

Solid walnut throughout — the round tray and the stem — not veneer over a core. The tray is turned with a soft, slightly irregular edge and a chamfer underneath, so it reads as carved rather than machined. The walnut is left to show its own figure, and each piece differs; the grain you receive will not be the grain in the photograph.

Before you order — three things

Load limit. Fifteen pounds is the ceiling. That is a book or two, a glass, a small plant, a candle, a phone and keys. It is not a stack of hardcover art books, and it is not a speaker. Treat it as a display and landing surface, not as storage.

The shelf height is adjustable on the stem. You can assemble the tray low or high on the vertical post, which changes the whole proportion — low reads as a floating dish, high reads as a small sculpture with a ledge. Decide after you see it on your wall, not before.

Installation. The simple mounting bracket is included, but Blu Dot's carriers do not install wall-mounted pieces and a professional installer is recommended. If you are fitting it yourself: find a stud wherever possible, and if you cannot, use proper drywall toggle anchors rated well above 15 lbs — the shelf's limit assumes the wall behind it is holding.

Where it works best

Beside a bed, at the height of your hand when lying down, it replaces a nightstand in a room too narrow for one — and leaves the floor clear, which is what makes a small bedroom read as calm rather than full. By the door it takes keys and a wallet. Hung two or three deep in a vertical run, with generous gaps, it becomes the display wall itself.
