Open Plan Long and Low Bookcase — White Oak
A Japanese room is designed from a seated position. Everything is measured against the eye of someone sitting on the floor, which is why traditional interiors stay low, horizontal and open overhead — the space above your head is not wasted, it is the point.
This bookcase is built on the same instinct. Eighty inches long and only twenty-six high, it draws a long quiet line across a room and then stops. Nothing looms. Sightlines carry over the top to the window, the garden, the rest of the room. A tall bookcase divides a space into before and after; this one simply lowers the horizon.
It is finished on every face, including the back, which changes what you can do with it. Push it against a wall and it disappears into the architecture. Float it behind a sofa and it becomes a low wall — the same job a fusuma screen does in a traditional house, separating without closing, suggesting a boundary rather than enforcing one. In an open-plan apartment that is often worth more than another cupboard.
The white oak is a veneer over a wood core, and the design leans into a single material rather than mixing metal and wood: frame, shelves and back all read as one piece of timber. Pale, open-grained, with the quiet uniformity that lets whatever you put on the shelves become the thing you actually look at.
Be honest with yourself about what goes on it. The upper shelf gives 7" of clearance and the lower gives 12" — this is a case for paperbacks, art books laid flat, ceramics, records and objects, not for oversized hardcovers standing upright. Within that range it is faultless. At 13" deep it also holds its discipline in a hallway or a narrow room where a standard bookcase would crowd the walkway.
Some assembly is required, and an anti-tip hardware kit comes in the box. Adjustable feet glides take out the wobble in an old floor.

Care
Dust regularly with a soft cloth. Clean with a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately — do not leave moisture standing on the surface. Use protective pads under ceramics and anything with a hard base. Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight and away from sharp swings in humidity.
