In a Japanese bedroom the wood is usually left pale and unlacquered — hinoki, sugi, planed smooth and then left alone. The finish was never the point. The grain is, and the way daylight moves across it through the morning.

White oak belongs in that company. Across the fluted front of this nightstand the light does not break into hard shadow the way it does on dark timber; it grades softly from rib to rib, much like light through a shoji screen at mid-morning. The texture is unmistakably there, and it still stays quiet — which is what you want from the one piece of furniture you look at before you are properly awake.

Then the part that actually decides whether it works in your room. It stands twenty-one inches high, three to five inches below the American standard. Beside a low platform bed the top surface lands roughly level with the mattress, exactly where a Japanese interior would place it: within reach of someone lying down rather than looming over them. The legs are only two inches, so the volume sits close to the floor and the long low line of the room carries on uninterrupted.

The brass is the single interruption, and it is kept deliberately small — sandcast pulls sunk into the grooves so nothing projects into the walkway at hip height. Against pale oak the brass reads as one warm point in an otherwise single-material piece, and it is the right metal for furniture you reach for in the dark: it takes the warmth of your hand, and it deepens with handling rather than wearing thin.

Two drawers, both solid American white oak, both soft-close. Be realistic about the capacity — the interior measures 20" × 13" × 6", which is precisely right for a book, a charger, reading glasses, a journal, the small private cargo of a bedside, and wrong for anything bulky. Care

Clean with a slightly damp, soft cloth and dry immediately, working along the grain. The flutes hold dust — a dry brush or a vacuum dust attachment once a month is far easier than chasing it with a cloth. Use a quality wood furniture cleaner for fingerprints. Keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight: white oak ambers over time under UV, and a nightstand half-lit by a window will develop an uneven tone. Leave the brass alone. It is meant to darken.
