Most nightstands are built for a tall bed. Stand one beside a low platform bed and the proportions collapse — the cabinet towers over the mattress, the lamp ends up above your head, and the whole corner of the room feels wrong without anyone being able to say why.

This one is twenty-one inches high, which is three to five inches lower than the American standard, and that is the entire point. Beside a low platform bed the top surface lands roughly level with the mattress, exactly where a Japanese interior would put it: within reach of someone lying down, not looming over them. The legs are only two inches, so the volume sits close to the floor and keeps the low horizontal line running unbroken across the room.

The front carries the same fluting as the rest of the Murmur family, scaled down. Narrow vertical ribs run across both drawer faces, catching light on one edge and holding shadow in the other, and in walnut that reads as carved depth rather than surface pattern. Set two of them either side of a bed and the flutes give you a quiet symmetry that a flat drawer front cannot.

The brass is the only interruption, and it is deliberately small — sandcast pulls nested down inside the grooves so nothing projects into the walkway at hip height. This is the piece you reach for in the dark, half-awake, and brass is the right material for that: it warms to the hand in a way steel never does, and it deepens with handling instead of wearing thin.

Inside are two drawers, both solid walnut, both soft-close. Be realistic about them — the interior is 20" × 13" × 6", which is exactly right for a book, a charger, reading glasses, a journal, the small private cargo of a bedside, and wrong for anything bulky. The case is plywood wrapped in walnut veneer, the back is finished, and at 55 lbs it has real mass for its size.

Care

Clean with a slightly damp, soft cloth and dry immediately, working along the grain. The flutes collect dust — a dry brush or a vacuum dust attachment once a month saves a lot of patience. Use a quality wood furniture cleaner for fingerprints, and keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight, which lifts walnut's colour. Leave the brass alone; it is meant to darken.
