Happy Day Shelving, 3 Shelf — White Oak / Putty
Wood shelves and metal blocks stack without the need for hardware, forming beautiful voids and cubbies to house all things in a perfectly curated manner.
There is a Japanese word for the pleasure of this: tsumiki (積み木) — the stacking wooden blocks every Japanese child grows up with. No glue, no fasteners, no instructions. Form comes from gravity and from how the pieces are set against one another. Happy Day is the adult version of that idea. Powder-coated steel blocks sit between white oak shelves and hold the whole thing together by weight and friction alone. Nothing screws into anything. Shift the blocks and you shift the openings — wide bays on one level, narrow ones on the next — so the negative space becomes the pattern.
How it is made — honestly
The shelves are white oak veneer over an engineered wood core, not solid oak. At 81 inches of unsupported span, veneered panels are the right answer: they stay flat and straight where a solid board of that length would bow. The blocks are powder-coated steel in a soft putty finish — matte, hard-wearing, and warm enough that it reads as ceramic rather than office furniture.

Before you order — two things
The 11-inch clearance is real. Standard hardcovers and paperbacks stand up fine. Anything over 11 inches — large-format art and design books, LP sleeves at 12¼", tall vases — will not fit upright. If your shelf is mostly art books, this is the wrong piece; look at the Open Plan Tall instead.
At 29 inches high, this is not a wall bookcase — it is a low horizon. That is its best use. It works as a room divider in an open-plan space without blocking sightlines, as a long media console under a wall-mounted screen, or along a low window wall where a tall bookcase would cut the light. In a small apartment, a 29-inch shelf keeps a room feeling open in a way a 76-inch one never will.
Living with it
The anti-tip hardware kit is included and should be used — the assembly holds by stacking, so anchoring it to the wall is what makes it safe around children and pets.
Dust regularly with a soft cloth. Clean with a damp cloth as needed and dry immediately. Avoid abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals on both the veneer and the powder-coated steel.
Some assembly required. Ships freight. Guaranteed 5-year warranty.
