The Japanese tansu was never just a chest. It was where a household kept what mattered, built from dark timber, made to be handed down, and placed exactly where the work of the day began or ended.

The Go Forth Bench belongs to that lineage more than it belongs in a showroom. It is built for the genkan — the threshold where shoes come off and the house properly starts. Eighteen inches high, the right height to sit and unlace without stooping. Forty-eight inches wide, enough for two people to get ready at once without negotiating.

The intelligence is hidden. A soft-close drawer sits in the front rail for keys, cards and the small things that should never end up on a countertop. An open compartment at one end takes a bag or a folded umbrella. The shelf below runs the full length, and shoes live there — off the floor, out of the walkway, which is the entire purpose of a genkan.

In walnut, the piece grounds a hallway instead of brightening it. The grain is deep and restless, running in long chocolate figures across the front, and it holds shadow the way the aged posts and beams of an old machiya hold it — darker at the edges, warmer where the light lands. Against a pale wall it draws a single firm horizontal line and settles the whole entrance.

The walnut is a veneer over an engineered core, and that is a decision rather than a compromise: a 48-inch span in solid timber moves with the seasons, while this stays flat and true through humid summers and dry winters. What you touch is real walnut. What holds it straight is better engineering than solid wood could manage at this width.

No legs to speak of, no handles, no ornament — it reads as architecture rather than furniture, which is how a threshold piece should behave. At 99 lbs it does not shift when you drop onto it, and it arrives fully assembled: carried in, set down, levelled on its adjustable feet, finished.

Care

Wipe with a slightly damp soft cloth, following the direction of the grain, then dry thoroughly. Use a quality wood cleaner as needed. Keep out of direct, prolonged sunlight — walnut lightens and loses depth where the sun sits on it daily.
